410 Stainless Steel Pipe: Properties, Specifications and Industrial Applications

1. Introduction

As a widely used martensitic stainless steel, 410 stainless steel has become one of the important pipe materials in industrial manufacturing due to its comprehensive advantages of moderate corrosion resistance, heat resistance, high strength and hardenability. 410 stainless steel pipe can be adjusted in hardness and strength through heat treatment, and has good machinability and weldability, which can meet the needs of various complex working conditions.
In practical industrial applications, 410 stainless steel pipe is often used to replace 304 stainless steel in low-corrosion environments to reduce costs, and is especially suitable for components requiring wear resistance and certain high-temperature stability. This paper starts from the material characteristics of 410 stainless steel pipe, sorts out its performance indicators and implementation standards, and summarizes its mainstream application fields, so as to provide comprehensive data support for engineering design and procurement selection.
2. Material Properties of 410 Stainless Steel Pipe
2.1 Chemical Composition
410 stainless steel is a chromium-containing martensitic stainless steel with low carbon content and about 11.5%–13.5% chromium. The main chemical composition is as follows:
C: ≤0.15%
Si: ≤1.00%
Mn: ≤1.00%
P: ≤0.040%
S: ≤0.030%
Cr: 11.50%–13.50%
Fe: Margin
Appropriate chromium content ensures basic oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance, while low carbon content guarantees good toughness and weldability.
2.2 Mechanical Properties
Under the condition of delivery in annealed state, 410 stainless steel pipe has stable mechanical properties:
Tensile strength: ≥450 MPa
Yield strength: ≥205 MPa
Elongation: ≥20%
Hardness (HB): ≤183 HB
After quenching and tempering heat treatment, its hardness can be significantly improved, reaching HRC40 or even higher, with excellent wear resistance and pressure resistance.
2.3 Corrosion Resistance
410 stainless steel pipe has general corrosion resistance, which is lower than that of 304 and 316 austenitic stainless steel. It has good corrosion resistance in dry atmosphere, fresh water, steam and mild alkaline environments, but its corrosion resistance is limited in strong acid, strong alkali and chloride ion environments. Therefore, it is mostly used in indoor, normal temperature and low-corrosion working conditions.
2.4 High Temperature Performance
410 stainless steel pipe has good oxidation resistance below 650℃, and can maintain stable structure and strength in medium and low temperature environments. It has good thermal stability and is suitable for exhaust pipes, high temperature pipelines and heat exchanger components in certain high temperature occasions.
2.5 Processing Performance
Good machinability, suitable for turning, milling, drilling and tapping
Can be welded by conventional welding methods, with low cold cracking tendency
Can be strengthened by heat treatment such as quenching and tempering
Certain plasticity, can be bent, flared and expanded
3. Standard Specifications of 410 Stainless Steel Pipe
3.1 International and National Standards
Commonly used standards for 410 stainless steel pipe include:
ASTM A268
ASTM A240
JIS G4312
GB/T 20878
These standards specify the chemical composition, mechanical properties, surface quality, delivery status and test methods of 410 stainless steel pipe to ensure product consistency and reliability.
3.2 Production Process
410 stainless steel pipe is mainly divided into two categories:
Seamless 410 stainless steel pipe: high precision, good pressure resistance, suitable for high-pressure fluid transportation
Welded 410 stainless steel pipe: high production efficiency, low cost, suitable for general structural pipes
Surface treatments include pickling, bright annealing, polishing, sandblasting, etc., which can be selected according to application requirements.
3.3 Conventional Dimensions
Outer diameter: 6mm–630mm
Wall thickness: 0.8mm–50mm
Length: fixed length 3m, 6m, 12m or customized length
Tolerance: outer diameter ±0.05mm–±0.5mm, wall thickness ±0.1mm–±0.5mm according to precision level
4. Main Industrial Applications of 410 Stainless Steel Pipe
4.1 Automotive Exhaust System
410 stainless steel pipe has good high-temperature oxidation resistance and moderate corrosion resistance, making it the preferred material for automotive exhaust pipes, muffler shells, tail pipes and catalytic converter casings. It can resist high-temperature exhaust erosion and has obvious cost advantages over 304.
4.2 Engineering Machinery and Structural Parts
With high strength and certain wear resistance, 410 stainless steel pipe is used in hydraulic pipes, guardrails, shafts, casings and support parts of construction machinery, agricultural machinery and transmission equipment.
